The COVID-19 pandemic has been an exceptionally difficult time for Canadians. We have felt isolated, scared for our safety, and worried for the lives of our loved ones. But, for Black and Indigenous Canadians, fear and seclusion have been a daily lived experience, long before the pandemic began. It is imperative that all Canadians come together to dismantle systemic racism, so Canadians in the BIPOC community can feel safe, supported, and empowered.
Leo Burnett Toronto is committed to making the changes needed across our company to ensure a real and lasting impact. We have seen a positive response to educational sessions and learnings within our own walls in the past month, but the work is just beginning; long-standing oppression has taken years to develop, so we must invest years into dismantling it. We know the only way to eradicate systemic issues is through a systematic and sustained commitment to the fight against them.
The recently published Open Letter To Canadian Advertising and Marketing Industry Leaders will play an integral role in our agenda for Diversity and Inclusion at Leo Burnett Toronto. While we acknowledge that change is made not by intentions but through actions, it’s important to us to let the BIPOC community know that we hear you and will continue to listen and act. We will do everything we can to deliver against the commitments you’ve asked of us. We will work hard to bring meaningful changes to the work we produce and for the people who create it.
